Te Uru with 10CH from Grey High

Shout out to the wonderful crew from 10CH at Greymouth High School.

Today this class of awesome Year 10s came to Karoro School and taught Ruma Tahi some new skill drills and the game "Te Uru".  To play Te Uru players pass the ball to team mates who must catch the ball with a flat handed catch. Players cannot run or walk with the ball. Players cannot knock the ball out of the hands of another player. If a player catches the ball with two hands then the ball is turned over to the opposition team.

Points are made when a player catches the ball while standing on one of the four end 'spots'. The 'spot' is then removed from play.

Thanks for the fun and the new learning 10CH! Let's do it again sometime soon.

  1. I saw a lot of this activity and was impressed by the positive participation. What a great idea to have GHS students (some ex-Karoro) come and teach us new games.

  3. Kia ora Ruma Tahi,
What great connections you are making in your community as well as online through Tuhi Mai Tuhi Atu. I bet you enjoyed learning from the Grey High students. Te Uru sounds like a great game, I did a google search and found some YouTube clips of the game - some spelt it Ti Uru and others Te Uru so I am not sure which one is correct. I read that it was traditionally played with a piece of Tī Kōuka or block of wood. This is the video video clip I watched. Is this similar to how you played it? Have you played again since Grey High came?
    Have a great week.
    Tania
