Pi Day.

Census At School

Ruma Waru joined hundreds of students from all around New Zealand and participated in the 2019 Census At School. We had to do a lot of measuring! We also had to weigh our school bags; many bags weighed over 3kgs! The survey also included questions about how we travel to school, what items were in our lunch box today, social media access, online time and use of devices at home and at school.

Symmetry In Art-Art in Symmetry

Geometry Art - Walt: use the invariant properties of figures and objects under transformation (reflection-whakaata, rotation-hurihanga, translation-nekehanga, or enlargement).
We learned that the invariant properties included internal angles, area, basic shape. When a shape is rotated the lengths, area and angles within the shape do not change but the orientation/position of the shape does. When a shape is reflected the lengths, area and angles within the shape do not change but the orientation/position of the shape does. When a shape is translated lengths, area, angles and orientation/position do not change. When a shape is enlarged (or reduced) by a scale factor angles and orientation do not change but area and lengths do.

Prism Tents



We investigated shapes for tents. We had to design and make a model of a tent. Many of the shapes we made were actually prisms.

Then we had to write about the mathematics within our tent. The writing  should include dimensions, properties of the shapes, and relevant te reo pāngarau.
We are learning to:

Identify classes of two- and three-dimensional shapes by their geometric properties.

Relate three-dimensional models to two- dimensional representations, and vice versa.

Triangle Challenge

Ruma Tahi students were given a Triangle Challenge to complete as part of our mathematical inquiry into triangles. When we had completed the challenge we made Digital Learning Objects to show our understanding of our learning.
