William Pike Challenge

What a great term to end the year with: tramping, kayaking, fishing, gold panning, an overnight hut stay.  Thank you Ruma Waru students for a fabulous year of learning, inside and outside the classroom (but especially outside).

Awesome Sportspeople

Breanna, Issac, Noah and Kade represented West Coast in
Under52 kg. Please note, they put boots on for the game.

Jean Batten came to Karoro

Ruma Waru undertook to solve the mystery of Jean Batten's

 missing medal.

We folded paper plane models of the Percival Gull and a Gypsy Moth and attempted to fly these across a set distance, through an obstacle and under some monsoon (balloon) clouds.

Buzz Planes were a challenge! Reading the instructions carefully helped!

Design Process

The design process resulted in a wide range of fabulous waka/boats this week. The focus was on buoyancy, stability, and load capacity.

Benny, Hamish and Fynn float the Mighty Smurf!

Issac, James and Kade had the remote control option      but lacked a little stability.

Jordyn, Billie and Hannah really did make sails out of bamboo leaves. (Nobody mention the axe!)

The Smurf trailed behind the raft.

Cooper, Sam and Charlie designed a very buoyant waka.

Jack, Flynn and Shannon created a 'sea worthy' trawler.

Breanna, Indi and Olive had some stability issues but they problem solved those!

Ilish, Mylah and Emma had a very stable, and very pink, craft with the HMS Noodle

Luken, Kayden and Noah used a lot of duct tape in their design.

An excellent design task with each group creating a waka that was buoyant, stable
and had sufficient load capacity. The use of natural or recycled materials was a bonus.
Great work everyone!
