William Pike Challenge Day tramp

What a great day out! We took climate change into account and walked from school to our destinations. The first walk was through the Omotumotu walkway.  We had some information about Rongoa Māori, traditional Māori medicines using native plants. We found kawakawa, rimu, makomako, koromiko and mamaku.

Our second walk was through Grandjeans walkway to the creek and beyond that to the ancient pine tree on the hill.  We had lunch under the pine tree. Then imagine our surprise when we met up with some students from Grey High, including four past Karoro School students.

We had enough time to have an small explore of the creek before we walked back to school.

Thanks to all of the parents who supported us today: Mark, Glen, Gareth, Kirsty, Luzette, Tracey, Rachel, Sarah, and our great teacher aide, Ms B.

2022 William Pike Challenge Beach Cook Out

Ruma Waru learned about camp fire safety; ways to build safe camp fires, how to safely light a camp fire and how to safely extinguish a camp fire. We were allowed a maximum of four matches per group and the challenge was to light the campfire using only one match... congratulations to Emma and Lucy who did this for their group. We also had to work in groups to develop and cook our meal on the camp fire. As you can see we did a great job!

William Pike Challenge

What a great term to end the year with: tramping, kayaking, fishing, gold panning, an overnight hut stay.  Thank you Ruma Waru students for a fabulous year of learning, inside and outside the classroom (but especially outside).
