Noho Marae

Mrs Glue, Brighid and Daniel create simple tukutuku patterns.

 On Tuesday Ruma Waru and Ruma Tahi travelled to the Arahura marae for our noho marae experience.  We all participated in the powhiri and the mihimihi after that.

Later in the day we walked along the awa and four students were found by pounamu.  From the awa we went down to the beach and created beach sculptures to retell aspects of the legend of Poutini, Waitaiki, and Tamaahua.

In the early evening we listened to the histories behind many of the figures to be seen on the marae and within the wharenui.

After dinner we participated in a range of activities followed by marshmallow smores at the ahi while we listened to stories. Then, after some beautiful waiata with Paula, we went to sleep in the wharenui.

Census At School

Ruma Waru joined hundreds of students from all around New Zealand and participated in the 2019 Census At School. We had to do a lot of measuring! We also had to weigh our school bags; many bags weighed over 3kgs! The survey also included questions about how we travel to school, what items were in our lunch box today, social media access, online time and use of devices at home and at school.

Cricket Tournament

This week we played in the West Coast cricket tournament. Most of us had never played cricket before and so we had to learn how to bowl the ball, how to bat, how to field and how to work as a team. Thanks to Jack O'Connor at SportCanterbury and Canterbury Cricket for the opportunity to be involved. We played with a positive attitude and supported each other. A number of people have put their names down for the development squad and we discovered at least one great bowler!

Welcome to 2019

Kia ora everyone and welcome to Ruma Waru.

This term we have a lot going on! Swimming, cricket, noho marae, a day tramp from Shamrock Creek to Goldsborough and lots of reading, writing and mathematics. 

We are also focusing on our teamwork and the Karoro School values: respect / whakaute, responsibility / takohanga, community contribution / kanohi kitea, and innovation / auahatanga.
